Bhilai steel plant attracted many South Indians for jobs and thus many Malankara Christians also landed up in Bhilai and Raipur town areas. Malankara Catholic Association was formed in 1981. Fathers from Bhopal used to visit the Catholics here to care for the spiritual needs. Fr. Joseph Kurmpileth started caring for the people from 1985. Bethany Ashram was started in 1991 and later history of Bethany Ashram and the Malankara Catholic church in Raipur go together. An ITI and a degree college were tried out but could not go ahead. From 2003 to 2006 the church was closed down. During this period Fathers from Hyderabad and Calcutta visited the people. In 2006 Fr. Mathew Manaluvila, OIC took charge to give a new life to the mission. In the year 2008, Bethany Nursing College was started, which is doing very well. Now there are Bethany Ashram, Bethany Convent, Bethany Vidyalaya and an English Medium school. All these are existing here under the supervision and authority of the Malankara Catholic church. Bethany Sisters of the Imitation of Christ (SIC) are running the school.
